The government’s Cabinet Committee on Government Purchase has given in-principle approval to import two cargoes of liquefied natural gas (LNG) through an international quotation process to meet the country’s urgent gas demand.
The proposal was approved at the 38th meeting of the Cabinet Committee on Government Purchase for this year, held at the Secretariat on Monday, August 17.
According to meeting sources, the Energy and Mineral Resources Division had proposed purchasing five LNG cargoes through the international quotation process in accordance with Rule 105(3)(a) of the Public Procurement Rules 2025. The committee approved the purchase of two LNG cargoes from the proposal.
The Ministry of Finance said one LNG cargo will be purchased from Vitol Asia Pte Ltd for the delivery period of August 23–24 at a price of $21.87 per million British thermal units (MMBtu), costing Tk 424 crore 60 lakh 60 thousand 800.
Another cargo, scheduled for delivery between September 4 and 5, has been approved at a price of $21.796 per MMBtu, with a total cost of Tk 423 crore 26 lakh 66 thousand 69.
Earlier, on August 12, the government decided to import eight LNG cargoes directly from the international spot market to meet the country’s gas demand.
