The prices of all types of fuel, including diesel, petrol, and octane, are set to increase again in Bangladesh. This time, the price of each type of fuel will rise by Tk 20 per litre.
The new prices will come into effect at midnight on Sunday.
The Ministry of Power, Energy and Mineral Resources announced the decision in a statement on September 20 (Sunday).
Before the latest price hike, diesel was being sold at Tk 115 per litre, kerosene at Tk 135, petrol at Tk 140, and octane at Tk 145. Following the increase, the prices have risen to Tk 135 for diesel, Tk 155 for kerosene, Tk 160 for petrol, and Tk 165 for octane per litre.
The government said it was compelled to raise fuel prices due to a rise in international oil prices amid the worsening war situation in the Middle East.
According to the Energy Ministry’s statement, international fuel prices and freight charges have increased significantly since March due to the ongoing conflict in the Middle East. Although prices in the international market have more than doubled, the government has not fully adjusted domestic prices in the public interest. As a result, the Bangladesh Petroleum Corporation (BPC) incurred losses of approximately Tk 22,875.66 crore from March to August.
Fuel prices have now been increased three times so far this year.
Earlier, from April 19, the price of diesel was increased by Tk 15 to Tk 115 per litre. During the same period, the prices of kerosene, petrol, and octane were raised by Tk 18, Tk 19, and Tk 20, respectively. In June, the prices of kerosene, petrol, and octane were increased by another Tk 5 per litre each. Prices then remained unchanged in July, August, and September.
